Warning signs

100 yards to a junction ahead controlled by a STOP sign

A white rectangular countdown sign with black text giving you 100 yards (roughly the length of a football pitch) advance warning that there is a full STOP junction ahead. You must come to a complete stop at the solid white line before proceeding only when the way is clear – rolling through or stopping past the line is an automatic fail on the practical test and can lead to a serious collision. This sign is especially important on fast rural roads where the actual STOP sign might be partly hidden by hedges, a bend, or vegetation. The 100-yard warning gives you time to reduce speed safely and check for traffic on the major road. In the theory test this sign often appears in hazard-perception clips to test whether you spot the hidden junction early.
