Maximum speed limit of 40 miles per hour
A red ring around the number 40. Used on roads where 30 mph would be too slow but full national speed limit (60 mph) would be too fast for the conditions — typically the outskirts of towns, busier rural roads and the approaches to villages. The limit is enforced; speed cameras on 40 mph stretches are common.
