10 miles to the next motorway service area
A large blue rectangular motorway information sign that tells you the next official service area is exactly 10 miles ahead. This is a key planning aid for drivers – the Highway Code strongly advises taking at least a 15-minute break every two hours of driving to stay alert and reduce fatigue. Once you pass these services the next ones could easily be 30 miles or more away, especially on quieter stretches of motorway. The sign is usually followed by smaller countdown signs at 1 mile, ½ mile, and 200 yards before the slip road so you can prepare to move into the correct lane in good time. Missing this sign is a frequent hazard-perception trap because drivers who are tired or distracted often fail to plan their rest stop in advance.
