Give way to traffic on the major road

An inverted red triangle is the second-most-prohibitive sign on UK roads after a STOP sign. You don't have to stop at the line, but you must slow right down and give way to any traffic already on the major road. Only continue when the gap is safe — emerging too soon and forcing others to brake is a common test fail.
